BE CYBER SMART and KNOW THE FACTS

We are excited about being able to connect with family and friends new and old via social networking, but are we aware of how easily it is to put ourselves and others inadvertently at risk? Just thought that I would share some provoking facts with you...
Did you know that more than half of social network users are putting themselves at risk of cybercrime by revealing too much personal data?

A recent survey conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center* illustrates how risky behavior on social networks can have serious consequences:
* 52% of adult users post information that makes them susceptible to cyber attacks

* 40% include their full birth date

* 26% post sensitive information about their children, including photos and names

* Many users post their full address as well as updates about when they’re not home

* 9% of users have experienced some type of online abuse, such as identity theft or a malware infection, within the last year

  1. Yes,thanks for the information Mrs. R ,there is indeed a dark side of blogging in particular and the use of the wider social network in general.Net users must be informed of the risks that are evident every time they go online.

The danger is potentially grave for children,I think we as teachers, parents and grandparents must introduce Internet etiquette to our charges and make them aware of acceptable and responsible behaviours that could protect them from the negatives that are prevalent online.

  2. Thanks for the reminder Edlin. It is imperative that we teach our students the rules first before 'letting thm loose' There's a dark side to technology and I have experienced an incident where one of our students planned a rendevous with a stranger she met on line. That was a great reality check for all involved. They need to be aware of the risks involved so that they can protect themselves from the dangers out there.

  3. This is so true especially as our students can open themselves to cyber bullying. Too much info is put out there, either as racy photos, even verbal baits. Sometimes even the e mail names they choose for themselves. As an educator I do not e mail stuff to students whose e mail addresses are provocative and downright unprofessional. That's me though. But we really need to inform and educate the students and ourselves.
